We have seeders so that you can grow perfect rows of vegetables and maximize the use of your garden.

Food Forests A food forest is exactly what it sounds like...a forest that produces an abundance of food year after year with very minimal input. Once a food forest is established you can eat tubers from below the ground all the way up the food producing vines to the top of the food producing trees. The best part of a food forest is that every year it produces more food than the previous year and it takes care of itself.

Pollinator and butterfly gardens are desinged to attract and feed benefical insects to help incease their local population and to help you fight off pests in your garden.

Weed Control Did you know that most chemical fertilizers and weed control options kill your lawn long term? In order to have a healthy lawn that survives droughts you need living bacteria and fungus in your soil. Chemicals kill the life in your soil and put you on a neverending cycle of reliance on chemicals. Here at the Backyard Farmer we can get you off of your dependance on chemicals through composting, compost teas, natural soil building, flame weeding, and hand weeding.

Raised Garden Beds Raised beds are a very quick way to start growing veggies and fruit bushes. Raised beds can be installed almost anywhere (even ontop of concrete). We build our raised beds from a variety of chemical free materials such as cedar wood, pine, stone, concrete blocks and bricks.

Cold frames Cold frames act like mini greenhouses that help extend your growing season. Some cold frames let in the heat from the sun and raise the temperature enough that you can even grow fresh greens during the winter. We have many different designs our cutomers can choose from and different materials are used depending on our clients' goals.

Chicken Tractors What is a chicken tractor? Chicken tractors are a fancy way of saying a cage full of chickens with wheels. Chicken tractors are used prepare the land for planting and natural pest control. Once the chicken tractor is built and the chickens are living there the whole structure is moved around on a daily-weekly basis to give the chickens some fresh greens to eat or more land to clear. Chicken tractors are used a lot in permaculture as an effective but simple tilling option. Please note some city bylaws may not allow chickens within the city limits but you may be able to get away with a rabbit tractor.

Compost bins The Backyard farmer compost bins are not those black plastic ones that stink up the neighboorhood. Our compost containers can be built on site from various sustainable materials and we design them so that they do not go anerobic and make everything smell. If your compost material is not breaking down or it smells really bad something is wrong. Contact us to help you start your own smell free compost pile. You will never have to throw away your organic scraps again.

Vertical Garden Structures We can build all sorts of trellises and arbours for your vertical gardening needs. Vertical gardens help maximize the space you have for growing food and they are good for preventing shading out of smaller crops.

Permaculture Landscape Design We try to design our landscapes using permaculture principles. We look at things that most landscapers do not think about such as wind, ease of harvest, and maximum yield with minumum disturbance. All of our designs are custom made to suit your needs and we offer different design options in order to be friendly to budgets of all sizes. The Backyard Gardener team can create FREE onsite rough sketches or we can put out professional 3d rendered ladscape designs. You choose what you want and we will design it for you.

Earthworks Permaculture is all about imitating nature when it comes to design. Forests do not need someone to water them to thrive and neither should your gardens. The backyard farmer offers swale building, pond installation, and other earthwork projects to get the water you have where you need it. In an urban setting we like divert all the water from your roof into rain catchment systems and your garden so that you can grow food with very minimal input using every drop of free rainwater that falls on your property.

Pruning The backyard farmers are skilled pruners and know which trees need pruning in order for you to have a bountiful harvest. If you have an old overgrown fruit tree that produces lots of small fruits we can prune it back for you properly so that your tree begins producing large great tasting fruits for you again. Pruning is a seasonal job so we will need to be contacted in advance if you need some work done to your trees.

Grafting Grafting is used for many things when it comes to fruit trees. If you have a variety of fruit that you love and you want to grow more trees like it we can graft it on another tree of the same species for you and make more trees for you.

There are also times grafting can be used for adding more branches to your fruit tree or mutiple varieties to one tree. If for some reason your fruit tree is missing branches on one side bud grafting can be used to balance the tree and add more growth to it.

Sometimes grafting can also save a tree if there is an emergency. If your fruit trees' bark is torn off or injured a method called bridge grafting can be used to try and save it. Bridge grafting makes a bridge for water and nutrients to travel and keep your tree alive. Please note that grafting does not work 100% of the time but we do our best and use the best tools to increse your chances of success.

Fruit Tree Pest Managment Insects and pests can do a lot of damage to your fruit tree and your harvest if they are not taken care of. We offer many chemical free options to get rid of aphids, caterpillars, squirrels, deer and other pests. Please contact us as soon as possible if you see that your trees or plants are being attacked or eaten.
